Description

Music (Full-year sabbatical replacement):

Riverdale Country School is a preK – 12 day school in New York City that combines both traditional and innovative practices to provide an excellent Liberal Arts learning environment. Through our guiding principles – developing minds, building character, inspiring commitment and creating community – we aim to shape disciplined and flexible individuals who will change global and local communities for the good. Riverdale’s Department of Music is seeking an enthusiastic, collegial and knowledgeable cellist/cello teacher to help develop technique and musical understanding in Middle and Upper School cello students. The position will be a sabbatical leave replacement for the 2017-2018 academic school year. The position will involve teaching sections of 6th and 7th grade cello classes, coaching the orchestra cello section, and coaching 6 or so chamber groups. The willingness to make basic repairs is useful, as is wide familiarity with chamber music and orchestra repertoire. Creating and adapting musical arrangements for the younger players’ concerts using a music notation computer application is crucial, as is the ability to simplify difficult passages in orchestra parts for some players. Having in-depth professional experience as a cellist is highly useful and inspiring to students of all ages. Also, the ability to teach bass technique will make a candidate especially attractive.

All candidates for Riverdale teaching positions should demonstrate an interest in engaging students in an environment that is both supportive and rigorous and will participate in community activities including advising groups, service opportunities, or other co-curricular activities. Our Middle School and Upper School are located together on the Hill Campus, so candidates who demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching across the divisions are especially attractive. A brief solo audition will be required. A Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s and Doctoral degree holders will receive additional consideration, as will those with previous teaching and performance experience. Riverdale is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Interested and qualified candidates should apply by sending an email to the Chair of the Department of Music at jcurry@riverdale.edu.
