For over 100 years, the leaders in music education and of the National Association of Music Education have worked to ensure that every child has access to a well-balanced, comprehensive, and high quality program of music instruction. Our mission is to encourage the study and making of music by all.
NAfME serves millions of students through membership of more than 75,000 active, retired, and preservice music educators. Our programs and activities are national in scope and reach all levels of students and teachers from preschool to graduate school. NAfME’s activities and resources have been largely responsible for the establishment of music education as a profession, for the promotion and guidance of music study as an integral part of the school curriculum, and for the development of the National Standards for Arts Education.
An estimated 25 million students participate in school music programs. Through music, students learn skills that last a lifetime—discipline, teamwork, and creativity. Studies show that students that participate in school music programs tend to score higher on standardized tests, are more likely to stay in school and graduate, more likely to stay away from drugs and alcohol, and experience higher earnings in their professional life.
